Description
The Red Shoes (1948) is a British dance drama by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, starring Moira Shearer as ballerina Victoria Page. It won two Academy Awards (Original Score and Art Direction) and is regarded as one of the greatest British films.
Plot: Vicky joins Ballet Lermontov, run by the controlling impresario Boris Lermontov, who casts her as the lead in The Ballet of the Red Shoes, with music by young composer Julian Craster. Vicky and Julian fall in love and marry, which drives Boris to cut them off. Years later, Boris persuades Vicky to return to the company. When Julian demands she choose between him and dance, she is torn, and she runs from the stage and throws herself in front of a train, mirroring the ballet’s doomed heroine. Boris tells the audience she can’t dance “tonight, nor indeed any other night,” and the ballet is performed around a spotlight on her empty place.
